1. The city folk who drove through the countryside hardly paid any heed to the roadside stand or to the people who ran it. If at all they did, it was to complain. Which lines bring this out? What was their complaint about?
Ans: The lines which shows complains are "At having the landscape marred with the artless paint" of signs that with N turned wrong and S turned wrong.
The city people complained that the road signs where arranged badly it's spoiled the beauty of the landscape.
2. What was the plea of the folk who had put up the roadside stand?
Ans: The people who put up the roadside stand pleaded the rich city people to help them a little. They also made a silent paired to this people to buy their products because they wanted to earned money from them.
3. The government and other social service agencies appear to help the poor rural people, but actually do them no good. Pick out the words and phrases that the poet uses to show their double standards.
Ans: In order to show the double standard of the government and other social service agencies, the poet uses two phrases-
(i) Greedy Good doers.
(ii) Beneficent beasts of prey.
4. What is the 'childish longing' that the poet refers to? Why is it 'vain'?
Ans: By "childish longing" the poet refers to the childish belief and hope with which the village people keep on waiting that one day atleast someone from all the thousand selfish people who pass in their cars will stop even if it was to ask about the prices of the products. Therefore, they keep their windows open. This longing goes in vain because nobody enquires about the prices of the products one person stops only to used the yard for turning around the car while another person comes and stops their only to asked for a gallon of gas which is not even sold there
5. Which lines tell us about the insufferable pain that the poet feels at the thought of the plight of the rural poor?
Ans: The lines that tell us about the insufferable pain that the poet feels at throught of the plight of the rural poor are "I wonder how I should like you to come to me and offer to put me gently out of my pain".
