Ans: The author refers that the north Bank has a character all its own a bast, remote stretch of flat, ageless land between the sand Banks of the Brahmaputra and the Himalayan foothills. It was a strange place, where the rivers dried up in the summer session or suddenly disappeared under ground.
2. What information does the au-thor give us about Manas Wild Life Sanctuary?
Ans: The author says that the Manas wild life sanctuary borders the Himalayan state of Bhutan, where a few rhinos can be found. There are numerous rivers which are full of mahaseer, and their banks are a favourite site for the Government's Christmas camps.
3. Describe the author's experience of crossing a flooded river on horseback on the North Bank of the Brahmaputra.
Ans: John Rawntree gives us as account of his experience crossing a flooded river on horse back on the north Bank of the Brahmaputra. Where he said that with much difficulty, he had to persuaded to jump into the water, he then slipped over his back and hung on to the tail of the house which was used by him as a rudder. When he pushed the tail to the right, the house shifted it to the left and vice-versa. Gradually they were moving and eventually they landed safely on the other of the river.

1. Relate the author's experiences of the road accident during the monsoon on the North Bank.
Ans: The author gives us a brief description of the road accident during the monsoon on the North Bank. While travelling with his family, he met with an accident because the monsoon came very early for which the road become increasingly slipper. Yet, the roads were motorable through driving.
The author to control the car on such greasy road. The roads which they were on was built on the top of an embankment above the normal flood level which was 6 feet hight. This road narrow and single tracked gradually the road become more slippery because of the rain. The author loss control over his car and fel over the edge of the road into a paddy field 6 feet below the road but luckily nobody was harmed.
2. Relate the author's reminisence of the forest bungalow at Kulsi.
Ans: The author John Rawntree gives a detail description of the forest banglow at kulsi located on the south bank of the Brahmaputra. This area is competitively smaller than the North Bank. Here, the place gave him the feel of an English woodland. The kulsi bungalow was situated on an area that was above the normal flood level the location of the bungalow was delightful for which it was the favourite place of the author. Teak plantation which where planted about 60 years ago surrounded the bungalow. Moreover, rubber plantation was also a satisfactory site for the author.
UNDERSTANDING the text
1. Give an account of the author's experiences of the floods on the North Bank of the Brahmaputra during the monsoon.
Ans: In this extract John Rawntree says that the north Bank remains delightful during the cold session. But in the rainy session, the same place became infected with malaria. Travelling in such for condition passes out in human. Which this place was best avoided. The water level also raises up during the rainy session and therefore the river get flooded the weak bamboo briged soon gets watch away but inspite of the alarming tracks under a passing vehicle, the bridges are extremely useful.
In such a condition, the author once cross a flooded river on horseback. But generally these crossing was made in a special kind of boat- Marboat. While crossing the flooded river, the author use the tail of the horse as a rudder. Somehow by moving the tail left and right, he managed to land safely on the other side of the river. In case of Marboats crossing were made either by paddling or by cooling this boat on to the other side of the river using a cable connected to this boat. A series of ghats or landing place had to be constructed on the river bank at different level as constant adjustment. Most of the main road during the rainy season were bill on the top of the river bank above the normal flood level.
2. Relate the author's observation on the use of mar boats as a mode of river transport in Assam.
Ans: John Rawntree the author of "Memories of a Chota Sahib" has related his observation briefly on the used of Marboats as a made of river transportation in Assam. Generally, Marboats are used in crossing a river it is a ferry consisting of a plank plateform carrying to open boats placed along side another. This boats are generally paddled across the river or they polled by a connection cable, street to the other side of the river. In this way, Marboats are usually sailed of on side of the river to the other by the force of river currents as such, it text a very slow performance to make such crossing by using a Marboats although this boat provide a significant means of transportation yet a series of ghats or landing places had to be constructed at different level in the river bank for constant adjustment.
3. Give the author's description of a sal forest.
Ans: In this extracted the author has described briefly the sal forest situation on the south bank of the Brahmaputra. The Assamese sal forest and the English woodlands are constructed by the author. In this forest, the trees are interested spersed with villages and cultivation of different crops. The reserved forest which were largely made up of sal trees were scattered with communities and agricultural areas through out these huge expenses of territory.
4. Describe the author's experience with bats in the Rajapara forest bungalow.
Ans: The author has given a brief description of his experience with bats in the Rajapara forest bungalow. This bats live on the roofs of the bungalow and their droppings were a constant remainder of their presence. The fruit eating bats where's large in size but they were less smelly. The wing spent of this bats where around 5 feet and at night they fly out in search of fruit. A straight image of ghostly shapes are created when this bats glide throught the sky on their silent wings. Rajapara would have been a charming place if it had not been for the bats which lived on the roof and around the author's bungalow.
